Tero Karppi

§1
My name is Tero Karppi. I am a doctoral student in Media Studies, University of Turku, Finland. My forthcoming dissertation discusses the role of disconnection in network culture and it is scheduled to be complete in December 2013. The first article of this project is titled “Digital Suicide and the Biopolitics of Leaving Facebook” and it was published in the issue 20 of Transformations Journal. As it happens I am also the only member for the Finnish Diagram ‘group’.

§2
My diagram is a mosaic made from the images of my social network friends. My current research interests involve understanding affects and/or intensities connected to new media technologies; what is the relation of life and A Life in network culture. The diagram indicates that in network culture and especially social media a life operates somewhere beyond the social. These images are personal and private and simultaneously shared and collective. They are filtered through different algorithms, software and hardware revealing that there is always something very non-human present in network culture.
